Like no other he was able to catch the magic of the moment in his paintings and fix it on canvas forever: sunbeams playing on gleaming water surfaces, light and shadow in the foliage 
of trees or the shining colours of a summer garden.

From his garden Claude Monet painted the summer façade of his first house in Argenteuil in 1873, framed by copiously blooming dahlia bushes. A good friend, Auguste Renoir even perpetuated him doing so in a painting of the same renown.
